Perception of Vocal Effort and Speaker Distance on the Basis of Vowel Utterances

چکیده
The sound pressure level (SPL) of vowels received by a listener reflects several non-linguistic and linguistic factors: It varies as a function of distance, vocal effort, and vowel quality. Increased vocal effort involves, in addition to an increase in SPL, an emphasis of higher frequency components and increases in F0 and F1. This should allow listeners to distinguish it from decreased distance, which does not have these additional effects. Here, it is shown that listeners succeed in doing so on the basis of single vowels if phonated, but not if whispered. The results agree with a theory according to which listeners demodulate speech signals and evaluate the properties of the carrier signal, which reflects most of the paraand extra-linguistic information, apart from those of its linguistic modulation. It is observed that listeners allow for between-vowel variation, while they tend to substantially underestimate changes in both kinds of distance.

متن کاملPerception of speaker sex, age, and vocal effort
Speech material recorded for the purpose of studying the acoustic properties of speech as a function of speaker sex, age, and vocal effort (induced by varying the distance between speaker and listener over a wide range) was used in perception experiments in which the subjects had to rate either the distance between speaker and listener or the age and the sex of the speaker. The correlations bet...

متن کاملPerception of Underlying Vocal Tract Setting Information in the Interpretation of Vowels
Acoustic manifestations of utterances vary according to the physiology of the speaker and the current underlying vocal tract settings as well as the rate and style chosen by the speaker. This may result in formant patterns for any given vowel being very different from those derived from citation forms for that speaker’s dialect. An examination of the acoustic signal arising from unscripted and ...
متن کاملAcoustic effects of variation in vocal effort by men, women, and children.
The acoustic effects of the adjustment in vocal effort that is required when the distance between speaker and addressee is varied over a large range (0.3-187.5 m) were investigated in phonated and, at shorter distances, also in whispered speech. Several characteristics were studied in the same sentence produced by men, women, and 7-year-old boys and girls: duration of vowels and consonants, pau...
